HDC’s vision is that all people live with dignity in safe, healthy, and affordable homes within communities of opportunity. That means HDC believes affordable housing solutions are viable only if they foster both social justice and environmental sustainability and impactful only if they are systemic.
One of the most unique and important aspects of the Exemplary Buildings Program is that it is, by its very nature, cross-cutting. It recognizes the interdependence of our region’s housing affordability, equity, and climate crises, and its goals and methods are designed specifically to have a substantial impact on all three. This is reflected in our Theory of Change.
This program grew out of a shared awareness of two things: first, that there is great and growing urgency surrounding these challenges, and second, that there is potential for dramatic progress through leveraging our region’s remarkable expertise in equity, sustainability, and affordable housing.
